There are a multitude of common pests that invade homes and businesses in Wisconsin. Here are just a few of these invaders.
Carpenter Ants are the big wood destroyers in the state.
Although we also have Termites in Wisconsin, they seem to appear more in the southwest part of the state. Carpenter Ants cause damage to homes by tunneling out cavities in wood. They invade wall studs, sill plates, and attics, where they establish colonies in wood and insulation. Carpenter ants prefer wood that is wet, as they can tunnel out cavities much quicker in soft wood. They will however, nest in dry wood also. Carpenter Ant colonies have a queen and workers. The females have wings. There are thousands of ants in one colony. Carpenter Ants can cause a lot of damage to structures because they constantly dig out cavities to lay their eggs in. In time, these areas become brittle, weak and unsound because the wood is destroyed from the inside out. Sometimes, these ants can infest the wood in homes without the homeowner even knowing that they are there until it is to late. Damage to homes from Carpenter Ants in the United States is estimated at millions of dollars each year.
Cockroaches are disease-carrying insects. They multiply at astounding numbers and infest kitchens in the home. Female cockroaches produce one egg capsule every 25 days and each capsule can contain up to 50 eggs! This means that over 400 young cockroaches can be produced from one female in a six-month period! They prefer damp warm hiding places and feed on human foods. There are five types of cockroaches in the US. They are the German Roach, the American Roach, the Oriental Roach, the Smoky Brown Roach and the Brown banded Roach.
The most common Cockroach in Wisconsin is the German cockroach.
